DeSoto County officials are warning residents about a new phone scam targeting members of the community.

The scam involves callers impersonating DeSoto County officials, such as the sheriff or county judge, and attempting to extort money from residents by threatening legal action or arrest if they don't comply.

"We want to alert DeSoto County residents to be aware of this scam and to take precautions to protect themselves," said DeSoto County spokesperson Natalie Brock. "This scam has been reported in other parts of the state, and we believe it may now be reaching our community."

Officials are urging residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities. They also advise residents not to engage with any callers who threaten legal action or arrest, and to never disclose personal or financial information over the phone unless they have initiated the call.

"If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a DeSoto County official and demanding money, it's a scam," said Brock. "We will never call residents and threaten them with arrest or legal action if they don't pay up."

DeSoto County officials are working with local law enforcement to investigate the scam and identify the culprits. They are also planning to launch a public awareness campaign to educate residents about the scam and how to protect themselves.

Residents are encouraged to report any scams to the Federal Trade Commission at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov or call 800-243-4080. They can also report scams to the Better Business Bureau at https://www.bbb.org/ or call 800-273-8464.

"We want to keep our community safe and informed," said Brock. "We urge everyone to be aware of this scam and to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves from becoming victims."
