It would be a shame if Palm Beach County taxpayers get stuck footing the bill for President Donald Trump's security here.
Palm Beach County taxpayers shouldn't foot the bill for President Donald Trump's Secret Service protection, argues Frank Cerabino. Instead, Trump should use the proceeds from his cryptocurrency venture to pay for his security.
Cerabino points out that Trump's cryptocurrency, which was launched the weekend before he was inaugurated, quickly rose in value, netting investors a tidy profit. Trump himself is said to have made billions of dollars through his control of about 80 percent of the tokens in his cryptocurrency.
"The getting was so good that his wife Melania got in the game with her own meme coin, $Melania, a few days after the Trump coin debuted," writes Cerabino.
Cerabino argues that such a disreputable venture coming from the White House opens up new areas of potential corruption and abuse. He notes that in Trump's case, a meme coin can also be used to buy influence, facilitate bribes and open doors to harmful foreign influence.
"I'm guessing that Trump hatched the plans to launch his cryptocurrency while staying at Mar-a-Lago the last couple months under the watchful eyes of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office," writes Cerabino. "In other words, we're expected to pay for his protection while he schemed a new way to turn his presidency into his own casino."
Cerabino concludes by suggesting that Trump be expected to break off a small number of dollars from his cryptocurrency side-hustle business to pay for the local uniformed deputies who made him secure in Palm Beach County.
