OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Announces Plans to Launch GPT-5 Within “Weeks / Months”

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced the upcoming launch of GPT-5, the latest iteration in the company's groundbreaking large language model (LLM) series. Slated for release within “weeks / months,” GPT-5 will spearhead a broader initiative at OpenAI to streamline its AI offerings and enhance user experience.

In a series of posts on social media, Altman provided key updates on the OpenAI roadmap for GPT-4.5 and GPT-5. The goal, he stated, is to simplify the company's product offerings and make AI more accessible and useful to users.

“We want to do a better job of sharing our intended roadmap, and a much better job simplifying our product offerings. We want AI to ‘just work’ for you; we realize how complicated our model and product offerings have gotten,” wrote Altman.

The upcoming GPT-5 release will integrate several technologies, including OpenAI's o3 model, and encompass capabilities such as voice, canvas, search, and deep research.

“We hate product sprawl and are working hard to simplify. This will take many launches, but the goal is clear: eventually, you should be able to get the best output for any prompt, in any language, with any app integration, and at any intelligence level,” stated Altman in one of his posts.

Prior to the launch of GPT-5, OpenAI will also be releasing GPT-4.5, which is known internally as Orion. According to Altman, this will be the “last non-chain-of-thought model.”

In March 2024, OpenAI outlined the development roadmap for GPT-5, highlighting an iterative strategy focused on enhancing the model's natural language processing and reasoning capabilities.

Now, as the model nears completion, Altman has announced that the new GPT-5 system will be available across different subscription tiers. Free users will receive unlimited access to GPT-5 at standard intelligence settings, while Plus and Pro subscribers will be able to access higher intelligence levels.
