Ocean, a renowned Bitcoin mining pool, has introduced DATUM, an open-source mining protocol designed to restore decentralization in block creation.
Bitcoin mining pool Ocean is introducing DATUM, an open-source mining protocol designed to restore decentralization in block creation. The new protocol will allow individual miners to build their own blocks using their nodes, offering an alternative to the widely used Stratum V2 protocol.
DATUM, which stands for "DATUM: A Truly Uncentralized Mining protocol,” is designed to give miners more flexibility in how they participate in both pools and solo mining. This flexibility will reduce the reliance on third-party configurations, which is a key concern in the centralized nature of Bitcoin mining today.
The development of DATUM is driven by growing concerns about the centralization of Bitcoin mining, which has become increasingly concentrated in a few large mining pools. Currently, over 50% of the network's hash rate is controlled by these pools, posing risks such as transaction censorship and potential 51% attacks.
Ocean's goal with DATUM is to address these risks by returning control of block creation to individual miners, maintaining the permissionless nature of the Bitcoin network, and ensuring the continued security and decentralization of the blockchain.
“The launch of DATUM is a pivotal moment for the Bitcoin mining community. We will be returning block creation to the individual miners, as was originally intended in the whitepaper,” said Luke Dashjr, co-founder of Ocean. "With DATUM, we are strengthening the security and decentralization of the Bitcoin network, safeguarding its future.”
DATUM is currently in a closed beta phase, with a public beta version scheduled for release on October 18. Those interested in participating in the closed beta can contact Ocean for more information.
“DATUM allows miners to act as true solo miners while still benefiting from pool rewards,” said Jason Hughes, vice president of engineering at Ocean. “Its lightweight code, written in C, makes DATUM highly portable and compatible with Bitcoin full nodes.”
With the introduction of DATUM, Ocean will make a significant contribution to reinforcing Bitcoin's core principles by promoting decentralization and security in mining.
