Punk 1563 changed hands for 24,000 ETH, a huge markup versus recent pricing.
A CryptoPunk non-fungible token (NFT) sold for a record $56.3 million on Thursday, a massive markup from recent pricing that's reigniting interest in the digital collectibles.
The sale price for Punk 1563, which depicts a pixelated woman with dark hair and blue eyes, is more than double the previous all-time high of $23.7 million set in February 2022. At the time, NFT Mania was reaching a fever pitch, with major auction houses holding dedicated NFT sales and celebrities flocking to the space.
Punk 1563 fetched 24,000 ether (ETH) in the transaction on Thursday, according to NFT marketplace OpenSea. As recently as September, the NFT was listed for sale for less than 30 ETH – around $40,000 at the time. At a price of $56.3 million, the latest sale marks a gain of more than 1,400 times for the seller.
The record-breaking sale comes as enthusiasm for NFTs has largely waned following the downturn in the cryptocurrency market last year. While 2023 has brought some recovery in crypto prices, interest has shifted away from digital collectibles and toward memecoins, which have seen astronomical gains in recent weeks.
Punk 1563 is now the most expensive CryptoPunk ever sold, followed by Punk 5822, which sold for $23.7 million in February 2022, and Punk 4156, which sold for $10.26 million in January 2023. In total, 10 CryptoPunks have now sold for more than $10 million each.
NFTs have historically seen all manner of weirdness around sales. There was the time in 2021 when another CryptoPunk technically sold for $532 million, though blockchain data clearly showed the same person was on both sides of the trade. And there have been allegations that NFTs were used for money laundering.
It's not clear what the motivations were for Punk 1563, though the seller appears to be a prominent NFT collector known as "punk4156." The seller's wallet, which is linked to the NFT marketplace X2Y2, also contains a number of other valuable NFTs, including several Mutant Ape Yacht Club NFTs and a VeeFriends NFT.
The record-breaking sale is likely to bring renewed attention to CryptoPunks, which were among the first NFTs to gain mainstream popularity. The collection of 10,000 pixelated punks has generated more than $4 billion in total sales volume to date.
