Nebraska coach Matt Rhule said he defers to Indiana’s choice of starting with the ball nearly every game because he trusts his defense.
But after IU scored on its opening drive and never trailed in a 56-7 win over the Huskers on Saturday, Rhule acknowledged that his defense didn’t play as well as he expected.
“We had them stopped, they made the first down,” Rhule said of Indiana converting a fourth down on its opening touchdown march. “… We had some opportunities, both drives, they scored early on, to get off the field. I thought we’d be better on third down, I thought we’d match up well in third down. We didn’t quite make any plays in coverage today we need to make.”
IU converted 5 of 9 third downs into first downs.
