NASCAR and NBA Social Media Accounts Hacked, Promoting Fake Crypto Coins

It appears NASCAR's social media accounts are being targeted as part of a larger cryptocurrency scam.

On Tuesday afternoon, the NASCAR X account as well as its Xfinity and Truck Series accounts, shared a press release announcing the launch of a new crypto coin.

"Introducing $NASCAR Token—the official digital asset of motorsports, built on Solana to enhance fan engagement, rewards, and exclusive experiences," the post read. "Fast. Secure. The future of NASCAR."

NASCAR was almost certainly hacked, just as the NBA's social media account was earlier in the day. The fake announcement said the NBA was launching NBA Coin, "a groundbreaking digital asset designed to redefine fan engagement, transactions and experiences within the basketball ecosystem." The release said the coin would be launched on the Solana Network.

The league's PR team confirmed to Front Office Sportsthe NBA's social media accounts were hacked. Even after the confirmation, the NBA was still being hacked as the official X account reposted the press release dozens of times. Shortly after the reposts, the league seemingly took control of the account, as the reposts were quickly deleted.

The spam messages come after the NBA announced a partnership with Solana earlier in the year. The league's partnership with Solana was to highlight youth basketball and create new Web3 experiences for fans.

The press releases kept getting spammed as the main NASCAR X account, NASCAR Xfinity Series X account, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series X account and NASCAR PR's X account would all share the same post. NASCAR's main account also shared a link to theLIAR TOKEN website, which appears to be part of the scam.

The posts were quickly deleted and NASCAR's accounts no longer appear to be hacked. However, a search of X for NASCAR and NBA quickly fills up with the spam messages.
