Michael Saylor's Bitcoin Playbook

Michael Saylor's Bitcoin Playbook

Michael Saylor, the chairman and CEO of Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), has led the company to unprecedented heights with his bold Bitcoin playbook. Since August 2020, Strategy has recorded a remarkable 2,466% stock increase.

This performance far outshines leading technology companies such as Nvidia, Tesla, Google and Microsoft. As of April 2025, Strategy has managed to garner an impressive 531,644 BTC, which represents about 2.5% of Bitcoin’s total capped supply of 21M coins.

The coins were acquired at an average price of approximately $66K per Bitcoin, which totals about $33B in investment.

As of December 2024, the firm held approximately 447,470 BTC, which represents over 2% of the total Bitcoin supply.

The company’s goal is to preserve and enhance shareholder value in the long term. In August 2020, Strategy began investing a significant portion of its cash reserves into Bitcoin due to concerns about inflation and the diminishing purchasing power of fiat currencies.

Strategy’s BTC accumulation playbook

The firm’s capital plan is focused on expanding Strategy’s Bitcoin treasury holdings. In January 2025, the company is planning to buy 11,000 BTC for about $1.1B, which will be financed through stock sales.

This purchase will bring Strategy’s Bitcoin treasury to 461,000 BTC. The company also plans to sell a new series of preferred stock to raise approximately $711M, which will be used for additional Bitcoin purchases.

Strategy is aiming to capitalize on the narrative of Bitcoin adoption and integration, which is becoming increasingly mainstream.

Its decision to prioritize Bitcoin was made at a time when established tech companies are focusing their efforts on artificial intelligence and cloud computing.

The company’s stock has surged by an impressive 2,466% since August 2020, when it began its initiative to invest in Bitcoin.

Its performance surpasses major technology companies including Nvidia, Tesla, Google, Apple, and Microsoft.

Strategy is now reaping the benefits of what many considered a risky investment when it bet on Bitcoin as its primary reserve asset.
