Memecoin Uptober Accuses Influencer Jaypeg of Orchestrating a Scam, Enlists ZachXBT to Investigate
Oct 21, 2024 at 11:44 am
Uptober's team has accused crypto influencer Jaypeg of orchestrating a memecoin scam. They claim that Jaypeg received promotional tokens, sold them, and then denied ever receiving any funds.
Crypto influencer Jaypeg has been accused by Uptober's team of orchestrating a memecoin scam. They allege that Jaypeg received promotional tokens, sold them, and then denied ever receiving any funds.
According to Uptober's team, they collaborated with Jaypeg to promote its tokens, with the influencer set to earn 2% of its supply, which amounted to roughly $2200, in exchange for his promotional efforts.
In a statement, the memecoin project said:
“On October 11, we reached out to Jaypeg for promotion, asking him to shill Uptober. We messaged him on X and agreed to discuss everything in a Telegram group.”
The influencer reportedly accepted the offer in a Telegram thread and received the payment. However, the partnership quickly turned sour when Jaypeg later claimed to have never received any funds.
Uptober's team alleges that the influencer received the funds but then deleted the receiving address that was sent to their Telegram group, apparently unaware that the deleted messages could be restored. He later claimed that the address sent was “random” and not tied to him, but went on to sell off the tokens.
The memecoin influencer also accused the Uptober team of attempting to blackmail him. In a public apology, he claimed to have donated the funds to a charitable organization, which sparked a backlash from the X community.
Some members of the community alleged that he faked the charity receipt, while others speculated that he made the donation to distract people from his involvement with Uptober. Additionally, he tried to distance himself from his promotional agreement with the memecoin, stating that he wants nothing to do with it after its team continued to follow up on the matter.
Uptober's team sought assistance from ZachXBT in investigating Jaypeg's claims
Uptober's team enlisted the help of crypto investigator ZachXBT to look into the issue and shared screenshots of their conversations with Jaypeg on X.
The on-chain sleuth, ZachXBT, found multiple pieces of evidence disputing the influencer's claims. The investigator discovered that the address that received approximately $2,200 in the tokens, starting with “8jpz1p,” matched the one that claimed airdrops from the Solana Saga smartphone on January 10, 2024, just hours after Jaypeg shared a Solana Saga unboxing video mentioning those airdrops.
