Capturing a whopping 30.67% of global investor interest, meme coins are undeniably the talk of the town, according to a report released by CoinGecko.
Meme coins dominated investor interest in 2024, capturing a whopping 30.67%, according to a report by CoinGecko. This marks a significant increase compared to 2023, where meme coins only garnered 8.32% of total narrative interest.
Solana meme coins led the charge among trends, pulling in 7.65% of investor attention and ranking as the fourth most-followed narrative. The Base meme coin trend also made its presence felt, grabbing the 11th spot with a 2.13% share.
Meanwhile, AI-inspired meme coins and cat-themed tokens rounded off the top 20, with 1.49% and 1.19% of interest, respectively. This playful side of crypto clearly struck a chord with investors looking for something less conventional.
Artificial intelligence (AI) narratives also made waves, clinching the second spot in terms of popularity with a combined 15.67% of investor attention. Within this space, the overarching AI narrative saw a modest rise, climbing from 11.32% last year to 12.58% in 2024. However, due to the surging popularity of meme coins, AI narratives ended up trailing in terms of overall investor interest.
Solana-related narratives emerged as another significant player in 2024, securing a combined 14.30% share of investor interest. Nearly half of this stemmed from Solana meme coins, which proved to be a magnet for market observers. The broader Solana ecosystem, on the other hand, maintained its presence with a 5.78% share, earning its place as the fifth most-followed narrative.
However, not every trend enjoyed smooth sailing in 2024. GameFi's popularity, for instance, saw a drastic decline, with its share of investor interest plummeting from 10.49% in 2023 to a mere 3.72% this year. This significant drop suggests waning enthusiasm for gamified finance projects, especially as new narratives gained steam.
On the other hand, the Real World Assets (RWA) narrative and DePIN (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks) gained in popularity. RWA's share jumped from 6.48% in 2023 to 8.64%, earning it third place in this year's rankings. Similarly, DePIN rose to eighth place, with its share increasing by 1.56 percentage points. These developments highlight how crypto continues to attract interest across diverse, real-world applications.
Adding to the diversity, Base-related narratives made a strong debut. Together, the Base ecosystem and Base meme coins narratives accounted for 4.87% of global investor interest. This suggests growing confidence in the chain, reflecting its strengthening position among blockchain ecosystems.
Solana and Base weren't the only blockchain ecosystems on the radar. Ethereum retained a modest 1.82% share of interest, while the Sui and TON ecosystems garnered 1.04% and 0.85%, respectively. In total, five blockchain ecosystems ranked among the top 20 crypto narratives in 2024, underscoring the dynamic competition within the space.
Despite the buzz around a handful of top players, it's crucial to note that the remaining 180 narratives shared 21.28% of total investor interest. This fragmented distribution reflects the ever-expanding scope of crypto innovation, where niche stories coexist with larger, headline-grabbing trends.
