Maryland is joining the ranks of 17 states considering establishing a Bitcoin reserve, as per a new bill introduced by State Representative Caylin Young. The bill, designated as MD HB1389, was unveiled on February 7 and aims to hedge against fiat inflation by integrating cryptocurrency into state operations.
The bill proposes the creation of a BTC Strategic Reserve Fund, which would be overseen by the state treasurer and serve as a reserve asset to bolster financial stability. The fund would be utilized to securely acquire and store Bitcoin, ensuring transparency in the process.
Maryland intends to allocate funds derived from gambling violations towards BTC investment. The bill also empowers residents and governmental entities to contribute BTC donations to the reserve. Furthermore, it mandates that state agencies accept cryptocurrency payments for taxes, fees, and fines, with the payees being responsible for covering transaction costs.
