Lomond School in Scotland to Begin Accepting Bitcoin for Tuition Payments in the Autumn Semester of 2025

A private school in Scotland will begin accepting Bitcoin for tuition payments in the Autumn semester of 2025, becoming the first school in the United Kingdom to do so.

Located in the Scottish Highlands, Lomond School announced that it will accept the flagship cryptocurrency for tuition payments in fiat currency. The school explained that the decision is part of an initiative to incorporate principles from the Austrian School of Economics into its educational framework.

“We are always looking for new and innovative ways to prepare our students for the uncertain future, and this initiative is a testament to that commitment,” said the school.

Highlighting Bitcoin’s accessibility, the school added that the cryptocurrency is “more democratic and inclusive, particularly for people in developing nations who lack access to traditional banking.”

At present, Lomond School does not plan to accept other cryptocurrencies. All Bitcoin payments will be converted to fiat currency upon receipt.

The school noted that it may consider creating a Bitcoin treasury in the future, depending on input from the school community.

“We are open to exploring other digital assets in the future, but at the moment, our focus is on Bitcoin,” it concluded.

The decision comes as other educational institutions have begun exploring Bitcoin in various ways, both academically and financially.

In 2022, the University of Cincinnati added courses on Bitcoin and Web3 technologies to its offerings. The courses are part of the university’s broader initiative to adapt to emerging trends and provide students with relevant skills for the changing job market.

Earlier in 2023, El Salvador’s Ministry of Education collaborated with Mi Primer Bitcoin, an education-focused nonprofit, to incorporate Bitcoin into the country’s public school curriculum.

In July 2024, the University of Wyoming launched the Bitcoin Research Institute to facilitate academic research related to Bitcoin and decentralized systems. The institute aims to study various aspects of Bitcoin, including its economic impact, legal implications, and technological advancements.

More recently, the University of Austin announced in February 2025 that it allocated $5 million of its approximately $200 million endowment fund to Bitcoin investments.

According to Chief Investment Officer Chun Lai, the university seeks to "capitalize on the financial upside of digital assets" as interest in Bitcoin and crypto continues to grow among institutional investors.
