Interchain Foundation Expands Technology Capabilities by Integrating Evmos as "Cosmos EVM"
Mar 19, 2025 at 06:46 pm
The Interchain Foundation, a key player in the Cosmos ecosystem, recently announced a significant expansion of its technology capabilities by making Evmos, previously an independent project, an official part of the Cosmos SDK, now rebranded as “Cosmos EVM.”
The Interchain Foundation (ICF), a core entity in the development and maintenance of the Cosmos ecosystem, has announced the integration of Evmos into the Cosmos SDK, now named Cosmos EVM.
This integration will introduce a standardized version of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) into the vast multichain ecosystem of Cosmos, currently home to over 200 appchains.
With this addition, Cosmos EVM will provide blockchains within the Cosmos ecosystem with full EVM compatibility, enabling support for JSON-RPC and Ethereum wallets, and facilitating seamless integration for native ERC-20 tokens.
This integration aims to strengthen interoperability between chains on Cosmos and the broader EVM ecosystem through the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol.
Related Stories
This integration will also see the introduction of new modules and a modified architecture for the Cosmos SDK, aiming to enhance its modularity and maintainability.
The Evmos code will be fully open-source and available on GitHub, allowing developers to contribute and build upon the technology.
This integration marks a significant milestone in the development of both the Cosmos and Evmos ecosystems. It is expected to attract more developers and projects to the Cosmos ecosystem, expanding its technology and user base.
The Evmos project was initially developed by a team led by crypto entrepreneur Federico Kunze Küllmer’s company, Altiplanic.
However, Altiplanic will no longer be directly involved in the project, and the Interchain Foundation will take over full responsibility for Evmos.
Küllmer will continue to consult with the Interchain Foundation, focusing on the interoperability and modular architecture of the new Cosmos EVM.
His expertise will be vital to the transition and to ensuring that the Cosmos EVM operates efficiently within the ecosystem.
The news comes at a time when the Evmos token was priced at US$4,61, down 2% in the last 24 hours and up 18% this week.
The Evmos concept was initially developed in 2016 under the name Ethermint, and was only launched on mainnet as a Cosmos-based chain in 2022, introducing EVM to the ecosystem.
Since the beginning of this decade, EVM has established itself as the de facto standard for smart contracts, being adopted by several blockchains that seek to replicate the success and functionality of Ethereum.
Now officially integrated into Cosmos, the expectation is that more developers and projects will be attracted by the robustness and interoperability possibilities that Cosmos EVM promises.
