Honor World War II history through commemorative coin
Oct 20, 2024 at 08:03 pm
Since moving to Tennessee, I’ve been inspired by the strong sense of community and the deep respect for our nation’s history that is evident in every corner of this state.
A new commemorative coin from the U.S. Mint offers Tennesseans a unique opportunity to contribute directly to the preservation of the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.
The coin, which was authorized by Congress in December 2022, is available for purchase now through the U.S. Mint website.
Proceeds from the sale of the coin will benefit the National Park Service in its efforts to maintain the memorial and provide educational programs.
The memorial, which was dedicated in 2004, honors the 16 million Americans who served in World War II and the more than 400,000 who sacrificed their lives.
It is a place of remembrance, reflection, and education, where the stories of bravery, resilience, and unity from one of the most pivotal times in our history are honored.
However, like any monument exposed to the elements and the passage of time, it requires ongoing maintenance and repairs to ensure that it continues to serve as a beacon of remembrance for future generations.
The Greatest Generation commemorative coin is available in both gold and silver, with a variety of options for collectors and those who simply wish to own a piece of history.
The gold coin, which is struck in 24-karat gold, is available in both proof and uncirculated finishes. The proof coin has a matte finish with frosted devices, while the uncirculated coin has a brilliant finish with raised devices.
The silver coin, which is struck in .999 fine silver, is also available in both proof and uncirculated finishes. The proof coin has a matte finish with frosted devices, while the uncirculated coin has a brilliant finish with raised devices.
The obverse (heads) of the coin features a depiction of four service members from different branches of the military, representing the unity and diversity of the Greatest Generation. The reverse (tails) of the coin features an image of the National World War II Memorial, with the inscription "National World War II Memorial" and the years "1941-1945."
Those who wish to purchase the Greatest Generation commemorative coin can do so directly from the U.S. Mint website. The coins are also available for purchase at some local coin shops and precious metals dealers.
For more information on the coin and how to purchase it, visit the U.S. Mint website at https://www.mint.gov/sales/?q=greatest+generation+coin&submit=Go
