Fhenix Unveils Nitrogen Testnet, Enhancing Decryption and Decentralization with Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE)
Nov 20, 2024 at 09:59 pm
Fhenix, an Ethereum Layer-2 scaling solution built around Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE), has announced the release of its upgraded test network, Nitrogen.
Fhenix, an Ethereum Layer-2 scaling solution centered around Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE), has announced the launch of its upgraded test network, Nitrogen. This update marks significant progress for the project, introducing a suite of advanced features designed to enhance decentralization, security, and performance.
The previous Helium testnet has now been superseded by Nitrogen, which boasts a broader range of capabilities. These advancements bring Fhenix closer to its goal of launching a mainnet and fulfilling its mission to integrate confidentiality into Ethereum.
Key Highlights: Enhanced Decryption and Decentralization with the Nitrogen Testnet
Among the notable additions to the Nitrogen testnet is the Threshold Network, a decentralized mechanism that processes decryption while minimizing trust assumptions. This aligns with Fhenix's goal of creating a permissionless, censorship-resistant environment for confidential computing.
To further optimize the user experience, the Nitrogen upgrade introduces Parallel Decryptions, a feature designed to address the inherent time complexity of FHE schemes. By enabling asynchronous processing of decryptions, this enhancement aligns with expectations for fast and efficient operations.
Moreover, the Nitrogen testnet includes Security Zones, a feature that provides developers with the flexibility to customize the security levels of their dApps. Zone 0 serves as the default setting, prioritizing robust security with less user trust involved. In contrast, Zone 1 enhances performance by utilizing a local keyset held by the sequencer, which may introduce a trade-off of greater trust for faster-speed decryption.
Commenting on the significance of this update, Guy Itzhaki, CEO of Fhenix, had the following to say:
“The Nitrogen testnet is a major step towards providing a permissionless, censorship-resistant platform for confidentiality with FHE. The introduction of the Threshold Network, along with new features such as Parallel Decryptions and Security Zones give developers the tools they need to create powerful confidential applications on Ethereum and bring us one step closer to the Fhenix mainnet launch.”
Expanded Functionality and Future Potential
The Nitrogen testnet also integrates Celestia for data availability, which contributes to reducing transaction fees and enhancing price stability. Additionally, a native function, FHE.rand(), has been introduced to facilitate seamless and automatic generation of random numbers for developers.
These updates collectively advance Fhenix's endeavors toward achieving on-chain confidentiality while simultaneously bolstering network security and user experience.
About Fhenix: The First Ethereum L2 with Fully Homomorphic Encryption
Fhenix stands out as the first Ethereum Layer 2 to implement Fully Homomorphic Encryption, a groundbreaking technology that enables secure computations on encrypted data.
As an EVM-compatible solution, Fhenix empowers developers to create and manage confidential smart contracts using Solidity and familiar development tools. The platform's vision is to propel Ethereum's evolution by integrating confidentiality into smart contracts, transactions, and on-chain assets.
The Nitrogen testnet marks a pivotal development in Fhenix's journey, laying the groundwork for a robust ecosystem of secure and private blockchain applications.
