Fake crypto bot scammer allegedly told investors, ‘Poof, you’re a millionaire’ - The Verge
Mar 30, 2024 at 04:07 am
Robert Robb, known as "pokerbrat2019" on X, allegedly persuaded crypto investors to send him $1.5 million to develop a purported Maximum Extractable Value (MEV) bot that promised extraordinary profits. After receiving the funds, Robb allegedly failed to deliver on the bot and used the money for personal expenses, including luxury purchases and a lavish vacation. The FBI's investigation has led to Robb's arrest in Las Vegas, and he is accused of multiple counts of fraud.
Alleged Crypto Scammer Robert Robb Enticed Investors with Promises of Million-Dollar Returns
Las Vegas, Nevada - March 29, 2024 - In a shocking indictment, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has charged Robert Robb, a self-proclaimed crypto enthusiast, with orchestrating an elaborate scheme that swindled crypto investors out of an estimated $1.5 million.
According to the FBI's affidavit, Robb utilized the popular messaging platform Telegram to lure investors with the promise of extraordinary returns through a revolutionary crypto trading bot he claimed to be developing. The bot, known as the Maximum Extractable Value (MEV) bot, purportedly employed sophisticated algorithms to identify profitable trading opportunities on blockchain networks, promising investors astronomical gains of up to 100 times their initial investment.
Robb allegedly distributed alluring messages to Telegram groups, tantalizing investors with claims of instant wealth. In one such message, accompanied by a whimsical image of a purple fairy wearing a mushroom cap, Robb proclaimed, "Poof, YOU'RE A MILLIONAIRE."
Enticed by the prospect of effortless riches, multiple investors reportedly transferred funds to Robb's designated accounts. However, after the promised delivery date, the MEV bot failed to materialize, and requests for refunds were met with a barrage of excuses from Robb.
Through extensive financial investigations, the FBI traced the stolen funds to Robb's personal bank accounts. Evidence suggests that a significant portion of the illicit gains was lavishly spent on extravagant luxuries, including a two-year lease of an executive suite at the Denver Broncos' Mile High Stadium, a high-end Jeep, and a luxurious vacation in the Bahamas.
The FBI's investigation further uncovered a pattern of inconsistencies and improbable claims surrounding the MEV bot. While Robb frequently boasted about the bot's advanced capabilities, there was no concrete evidence to substantiate these claims.
Despite his history of publicly denouncing crypto scams, Robb's own actions appear to contradict his professed concern for investor protection. Under the Twitter handle @pokerbrat2019, Robb portrayed himself as a victim of past extortion and frequently warned his followers about the dangers of dishonest crypto practices.
On March 20, 2024, 46-year-old Robb was apprehended in Las Vegas and charged with multiple counts of wire fraud and money laundering. Crypto detective ZachXBT shared a screenshot of his arrest records on the social media platform X.
Robb's online presence has remained dormant since the day of his arrest. His final post, published hours before his apprehension, mocked his followers for their "predictability" and teased the imminent release of a Solana bot.
The FBI's prosecution of Robert Robb underscores the urgent need for vigilance and due diligence in the cryptocurrency market. Investors are urged to exercise caution when confronted with unrealistic investment promises and to thoroughly research any potential opportunities before committing funds.
The case against Robb serves as a stark reminder that even within the rapidly evolving realm of digital assets, fraudsters continue to exploit the allure of quick riches, and it remains essential to rely on reputable sources and proven investment strategies to safeguard financial well-being.
