New course explores blockchain's role in business sustainability

Mar 25, 2025 at 05:06 pm

Binance Academy, the educational division of the crypto exchange Binance, has collaborated with Finland's University of Oulu to launch a free online course titled “Blockchain for Business Sustainability”.

New course explores blockchain's role in business sustainability

Binance Academy and Finland’s University of Oulu have teamed up to offer a free online course titled "Blockchain for Business Sustainability." The program is designed to provide learners with insights into how blockchain technology can contribute to sustainable business strategies and environmental responsibility.

The course was developed in partnership with Professor Dr. Teck Ming (Terence) Tan of Oulu Business School and the University of Helsinki. Tan's research focuses on examining the role of blockchain technology in sustainable business models.

"I am thrilled to collaborate with Binance Academy on the 'Blockchain for Business Sustainability' course. Together, we have explored five key domains: supply chain management, circular economy, renewable energy, ESG reporting, and incentivization. Our goal is to clarify what blockchain can achieve and to understand how blockchain technology contributes to a sustainable future. It is an inspiring journey to partner with Binance Academy and share my knowledge about the transformative and decentralized role of blockchain technology in sustainable business practices," said Dr. Teck Ming (Terence) Tan, Associate Professor of Marketing at Oulu Business School.

The course consists of 12 modules delivered over three weeks, with a total duration of three and a half hours. Weekly quizzes help assess progress, and participants receive a co-branded certificate from Binance Academy and the University of O울루 upon completion. The course is accessible in English and is available for free.

Real-world applications and industry relevance

Binance Academy played a key role in developing the course, contributing to content creation and the design of educational materials.

"At Binance Academy, we believe education is key to driving blockchain adoption and empowering individuals to navigate the evolving digital economy. By partnering with the University of Oulu, we are making high-quality blockchain education more accessible and relevant to real-world challenges. This free course will help learners understand blockchain’s role in sustainability and use it to transform industries, making them more transparent, efficient, and environmentally responsible," said Stephen McAllister, Team Lead at Binance Academy.

This launch follows Binance Academy’s continued commitment to making blockchain education accessible, such as its recent partnership with BNB Chain to deliver free Web3 training programs.

The curriculum explores several practical applications of blockchain, including improving supply chain transparency, supporting carbon trading, promoting ethical marketing, and enabling traceability in sharing economies. By focusing on these areas, the course aims to demonstrate how blockchain can help industries become more efficient, transparent, and environmentally conscious.

The bottom line

The partnership between Binance Academy and the University of Oulu marks another step in making blockchain education accessible and relevant to global sustainability efforts. By offering a self-paced, certified course that focuses on the environmental and ethical potential of blockchain, the initiative equips learners with tools to navigate and influence a growing field that intersects technology and social responsibility.
