Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has adopted Moo Deng, a beloved pygmy hippopotamus at Thailand’s Khao Kheow Open Zoo, as part of the zoo’s Wildlife Sponsorship Program.

Following the announcement on Thursday, the price of the MOODENG meme coin on Ethereum surged by over 70% within an hour.

“Thanks for the warm welcome to the family and your work for wild animals!” Buterin tweeted.

“I’m happy to be adoptive father to Moo Deng as she grows up over the next 2y and support her with my 10M THB donation, maybe more as I set aside 88 ETH for🦛+ frens. May they live long and prosper🖖🏻”

The adoption and donation by Buterin, who is also known for creating Dogecoin, have brought attention to the plight of endangered species and the role of cryptocurrencies in supporting conservation efforts.

According to the X post by the zoo, Buterin’s donation will be made in two installments. The first installment, totaling 500,000 THB, will be credited to the zoo today, December 26. The remaining 500,000 THB will be donated within a year, as stated by Buterin himself.

MOODENG meme coin price on Ethereum, the second-largest blockchain network, skyrocketed by nearly 70% in just an hour, followed by a surge of 275% in trading volume, as per CoinMarketCap data.

Meanwhile, other animal-themed meme coins also saw significant price movements. MOO DENG (moodeng.vip) reached a market cap of $92.63M, reflecting a 78.60% increase, according to CoinMarketCap data.

Investors looking for diversification opportunities might consider bird-themed Flockerz (FLOCK), which had a market cap of $664.07K, indicating steady growth in its value.

CatSlap (SLAP) also had a noteworthy performance, surging 2766% from its all-time low, while frog-themed Wall Street Pepe (WEPE) showed a more modest gain of 114% from its all-time low.
