Chromia Will Launch One of the World's First Decentralized Vector Databases

Chromia, the relational blockchain, is introducing one of the world’s first decentralized vector databases with its Mimir Upgrade on March 25. The technology offers a blockchain-enhanced alternative to traditional centralized vector databases, paving the way for a decentralized and open-source approach to storing and retrieving vector embeddings for AI-driven applications.

As the capabilities of AI tools such as GPT and DeepSeek have attracted widespread public attention, the technology powering these tools has remained largely out of the spotlight. Among these technologies are vector databases, which are used to power AI capabilities such as enhanced text retrieval, enable long-term memory, and optimize similarity searches.

However, these databases are typically stored on cloud servers, raising issues of centralization and openness. To address these challenges, Chromia's Mimir Upgrade will be introducing a decentralized method of retrieval and storage through a trustless solution for AI as well as use cases of blockchain.

Mimir Upgrade Expands Decentralized AI Capabilities

According to Johnson Lai, Head of Data and AI at Chromia:

“Most vector databases today are centralized in infrastructure, but that will all change with the Mimir Upgrade. By allowing projects operating at the intersection of artificial intelligence and blockchain to store and retrieve their vectorized data natively on Chromia, the upgrade will open up new frontiers for decentralized AI applications. It will enable seamless data management within the blockchain ecosystem, paving the way for more innovative AI-driven solutions.”

Chromia's relational structure is a key factor in this transformation. Unlike legacy blockchains, Chromia can group sets of information in an efficient manner, which amplifies its storage, search, and updating capabilities. This structure allows for the addition of a vectorized layer, which would be impossible on legacy blockchain systems.

The Mimir Upgrade is just one part of Chromia's greater vision to promote blockchain-based AI. This also involves the addition of Python, a popular programming language for AI, and the creation of a $20 million Data and AI Ecosystem Fund to stimulate innovation.

Earlier this year, Chromia launched EVAL Engine, a solution that evaluates AI agent interactions and tracks performance decay over time through Virtual Protocol. After the upgrade, Chromia will proceed to further extend its decentralized AI features and reinforce partnerships with Web2 and Web3 players.

Bringing transparency and decentralization to AI infrastructure, Chromia is taking a leading role in the integration of blockchain and artificial intelligence. Through enhanced AI and Web3 solutions, the network aims to become a decentralized AI innovation leader.
