A TikTok user who goes by the name Coin Collecting Wizard has left his 218,000 followers amazed after sharing details of a copper penny that could be worth a small fortune.

If you find the extremely uncommon 1p coin, you could end up £100,000 richer.

He said: "If I told you there was a penny worth £100,000, would you believe me? Well you should, and here is why!

"It is the older predecimal pennies you need to look for. This penny right here is the 1933 penny from England, which is worth at least £100,000."

So what are the details you need to look out for? The main one is the date – and 1933 is very significant when it comes to 1p pieces.

That's because the Royal Mint had decided against minting new pennies due to a sufficient number in circulation.

However, the coin enthusiast had some news for viewers. He added: "Here's the twist – a few were made.

"Experts believe around six or seven 1933 pennies were struck for things like ceremonial foundations."

More details of the rare 1933 penny worth £100,000

Aside from the date, there are other characteristics to look out for. Features include King George V's left-facing profile, crafted by Sir Bertram Mackennal, surrounded by the inscription: "GEORGIVS V DEI GRA: BRITT: OMN: REX FID: DEF: IND: IMP."

After translation from Latin, the message reads: "George V, by the Grace of God, King of all the Britons, Defender of the Faith, and Emperor of India."

The reverse of the coin features a seated depiction of Britannia, clutching a trident in her right hand and a Union Jack-adorned shield in her left. The inscription 'ONE PENNY' is present, with the year 1933 just below it.

The TikToker added: "Due to its rarity, the 1933 penny is highly sought after by collectors.

"Its scarcity, unique backstory, and status as a 'celebrity coin' make it incredibly valuable.

"One of these rare coins sold for over £72,000 in 2016 at auction. So imagine finding that in your attic!"

Before you start turning your home upside down looking for one of the rare pennies, we have to remind you that there are very few of them out there.

Most are housed in museums or private collections, so stumbling upon one would be quite the stroke of luck.

The money expert added: "Don't get your hopes up, counterfeits are everywhere.

"Most 1933 pennies you see online are fakes. Whether you're a coin collector or just fascinated by history, the 1933 penny remains a piece of British numismatic lore."
