Chainlink Introduces Multistream, a New Upgrade to Data Streams That Significantly Enhances Oracle Scalability and Speed
Mar 20, 2025 at 07:50 am
Chainlink has introduced Multistream, a new upgrade to Data Streams that significantly enhances oracle scalability and speed. The decentralized oracle network (DON) can now process thousands of unique data streams per second, delivering a 1000x increase in throughput.
output:
Chainlink has unveiled Multistream, a substantial upgrade to Data Streams that drastically amplifies the scalability and velocity of Chainlink oracles. This integration permits the decentralized oracle network (DON) to process thousands of distinct data streams each second, signifying a 1000x increment in throughput.
The update also streamlines the deployment of new data streams, rendering their activation faster and more efficient. Multistream enhances Data Streams for DeFi protocols by allowing developers to aggregate multiple data types in a single request and retrieve them on-chain with increased speed and flexibility.
Multistream builds upon Chainlink’s existing Data Streams, a service that enables smart contracts to directly connect with off-chain data APIs in a decentralized and verifiable manner. This capability is crucial for DeFi protocols, which heavily rely on external data to execute functions like liquidations, options pricing, and decentralized exchange (DEX) rates.
Despite the importance of oracle data for DeFi, conventional approaches have faced limitations in throughput and the types of data that can be integrated into smart contracts. To overcome these challenges, Multistream introduces several key upgrades to Chainlink Data Streams:
Multistream enables Chainlink oracles to process thousands of unique data streams per second. In contrast, traditional oracle networks are typically limited to processing a few hundred data streams per minute.
The update introduces a new model for deploying data streams, making the process faster and more efficient. Activating new data streams is now significantly optimized, allowing for seamless integration of diverse data sources.
Multistream facilitates the aggregation of multiple data types in a single request to Chainlink oracles. This capability streamlines the process of retrieving complex data structures on-chain.
“Multistream is a natural evolution of Chainlink Data Streams, pushing the boundaries of oracle scalability and efficiency even further,” said Steve Rockwell, Chief Technology Officer at Chainlink Labs. “It’s a significant step forward for DeFi and Web3, unlocking new levels of performance and innovation.”
Multistream is the latest in a series of updates to the Chainlink ecosystem. In recent months, Chainlink has also launched Chainlink CCIP, a cross-chain interoperability protocol, and Chainlink VAA, an asynchronous verification technology. These updates are part of Chainlink’s broader effort to expand the capabilities of decentralized oracles and support the development of new blockchain applications.
