Car expert shares simple 20p coin trick to check your tyre treads and avoid a hefty fine
Aug 23, 2024 at 11:00 am
With the warmer weather encouraging more road trips and family visits, the streets are likely to be busier. This could mean fines come quicker for those not keeping their vehicles in check.
A car expert has shared an easy way to check your tyre treads and avoid a hefty fine using just a 20p coin.
With the warmer weather encouraging more road trips and family visits, the streets are likely to be busier.
This could mean fines come quicker for those not keeping their vehicles in check.
Vytas Palovis, Vice President of Growth at car parts marketplace Ovoko, shared his essential tips to keep your vehicle running safely and fine-free.
Meeting minimum requirements for tyre pressure can prevent flat tyres and blowouts, as well as help you avoid fines.
All you need, according to Vytas, is a 20p coin.
Vytas emphasised the importance of regular tyre inspections, stating: "Ambient temperature increases of 10C can raise tyre pressure by 1-2 PSI, which, when combined with increased heat from contact with the road, can increase pressure and increase the chances of your tyre blowing out.
"Most passenger cars have a recommended tyre pressure of 30 - 35 PSI but consult your manual for your vehicle's specific tyre pressure range.
"Maintaining optimal tyre pressure can prevent flat tyres or blowouts and help maximise fuel efficiency on long trips.
"Don't forget also to check the air pressure of your spare tyre to ensure it will be a reliable alternative in case of an emergency.
"Warmer weather can increase the wear and tear on your tyres, so check for any cracks and bulges, and listen out for any noises that occur as you drive.
"Ensure your tyres meet the legal minimum limit of 1.6 millimetres across the central three-quarters of the tyre tread.
"If you insert a 20p coin into the tread and the outer banding of the coin is visible, this indicates that the tyre is below the legal limit."

"The 20p trick has been around for some time and YouTube driving schools previously shared the hack with members of the public.
Comments left on an OOOSH! Driving School video confirmed the 20p hack was a life-saver, with one user writing: "I have suspicions mine need changing. The drive is bumpy and unstable. I'll measure with a 20p. I just needed to see someone else doing it and now I know how."
