Is a 50p Coin Worth More Than $10?
Well, believe it or not, it turns out a 2011 Judo 50p coin recently sold for a whopping £10.50 on an online marketplace, which is over 20 times its face value. And get this, the buyer even had to pay an additional £2.20 for shipping!
Why Is It So Valuable?
So, what makes this particular coin so special? It's all about the limited mintage. The Royal Mint, which is responsible for producing British coins, hosted a competition for the public to design commemorative coins for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Out of a staggering 30,000 submissions, only 29 designs were selected, including the Judo design by David Cornell, a painter and sculptor.
Rarity Reigns Supreme
According to the Royal Mint, the Olympic 50p coins with the lowest mintages, like the wrestling coin by Roderick Enriquez with only 1,129,500 minted, tend to fetch higher prices on the secondary market. So, if you have any of these rare coins lying around, they could be worth a pretty penny.
Know Your Market
Before you list your coin for sale, the Royal Mint advises collectors to do their research and determine the number of coins in circulation. This will help you set a fair price and avoid any unpleasant surprises. And if you're not sure about the value of your coin, it's always a good idea to consult an expert for guidance.
