Five old British coins that could now be worth more than £15,000 combined have been revealed by an expert.

The pieces haven't been legal tender for many years and include a florin, or two-shilling piece, and thruppence, or three pence.

An account known as the Coin Collecting Wizard explained exactly what to look for, in a video uploaded to social media platform TikTok.

He said: “Ye old English coins that will make you rich today.”

The first coin he advised people to look out for is a brass thruppence from 1949.

He said: “The 1949 brass thruppence has a very low mintage of just 464,000.”

Coins that are low mintage are often very valuable as it means there aren’t many of them about.

“One of these recently sold for just under £500 in fine condition,” he said.

Next up is a 1924 florin. Florins were withdrawn from circulation in the UK in 1993.

He continued: “This coin has a value of £65 in fine condition and over £145 in uncirculated condition.

“The 1925 florin is next with another low mintage of just over a million. This coin sells for around £40 in good condition and over £500 in uncirculated condition.”

Even more valuable is a penny coin from 1869.

The coin collector said: “No one knows how many of this old penny were minted from 1869 and can have a value of up to £5000 pounds in good condition.”

Finally he advised how to spot a rare coin worth up to £10,000.

He said: “The 1905 half crown is one of the rarest half crowns to ever be minted at just over 166,000.

“This can fetch anywhere between £450 and £10,000.”
