New Bitcoin Whales’ Realized Cap Approaches Parity With Veteran Whales, Signaling Generational Shift in Ownership

The Bitcoin market is seeing a big change in whale activity, with new players rising quickly. CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju says the Realized Cap of new Bitcoin whales spiked in 2023. This metric shows how much each coin cost overall.
In the further simplified Realized Cap model, each Bitcoin is valued at the price it last traded. This shows how capital allocation changes across new and old cohorts of whales. However, whales sporting over 1,000 BTC are being split into short and long-term cohorts by the age of that holding.
New Bitcoin Whales’ Realized Cap Approaches Parity
The Realized Cap of new Bitcoin whales has grown a lot in recent years. But older whales, holding the crypto for longer than 155 days, used to dominate this metric. That said, the newly made whales’ Realized Cap is closing in on parity at $113 billion to the old whales’ $113 billion, hitting $108 billion.
After 2018, this growing share of new whales started to rise significantly. Before that period, older whales controlled most of the Realized Cap. The rise of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) could explain the new whale dominance this year.
Generational Shift Reshapes Bitcoin Ownership Landscape
From the data, we can see that new whales will soon rise over veteran ones. This trend suggests that ownership of Bitcoin is being passed to new players. The gap between old and new whales is shrinking rapidly as more new investors come into the market.
Ki Young Ju stated,
“It could indicate other shifts of how that capital is distributed across the Bitcoin node.”
The rising involvement of institutional investors and ETFs in cryptocurrency results from this ongoing generational change. New whales suggest an increasing diversity of the investor base.
Spot ETFs Attract Large Investors
Recent institutional inflows have likely contributed to the strong growth in the Realized Cap of new whales. As spot ETFs become popular, more and more large investors choose to enter the Bitcoin market via these regulated channels. Due to these inflows, new whale capital is increasing quickly.
This marks a significant shift in how Bitcoin wealth is divvied up: it becomes too apparent. Older whales now face new market entrants who have swept up most value. It reflects the market shift and increased investor interest in the mainstream.
