Bitcoin's Most Valuable Blocks Emerge After Halving Event

Apr 21, 2024 at 10:04 pm

Following Bitcoin's halving, nine of the ten most valuable blocks in history were mined, with the most valuable being an accidental $3 million overpayment in November 2023. These "epic sats," created during halving events, are significantly rarer than "rare sats." The first block miners after halving are known as "epic sats" and are 100x rarer than the rarer sats.

Bitcoin's Most Valuable Blocks Emerge Post-Halving Event

In a recent development, prominent crypto enthusiast Clark Moody has shed light on the nine most valuable blocks mined following the highly anticipated Bitcoin Halving event. Notably, nine out of the ten most valuable blocks in Bitcoin's history have been mined since the halving, with one exception resulting from an accidental overpayment worth $3 million last November.

Impact of Halving on Block Rewards

The Bitcoin halving, which was successfully completed on April 19, 2024, has had a significant impact on the cryptocurrency market. As reported by Chinese crypto journalist Colin Wu, the minting of Runes has led to an average revenue per block on the network reaching an impressive 21.74 BTC. Additionally, the transaction fee reward per block has surged to 18.62 BTC.

The Most Valuable Blocks

The inaugural halving block, known as the "first halving block," reaped a total fee and block reward of $2.6 million. Subsequent blocks have garnered rewards ranging from $1.3 million to $2 million.

However, the most valuable block remains the $3 million accident overpayment. In November 2023, a mistaken Bitcoin transfer saw a user pay 83.65 BTC, equivalent to over $3.1 million, to transfer 55.77 BTC ($2.1 million). The pre-transaction balance stood at 139.42 BTC ($5.2 million), resulting in an overpayment of 120,528 times, dwarfing the previous highest fee of $500k by more than six times.

Significance of "Epic Sats"

Typically, miners who extract the first block at the halving become known as "epic sats." These epic sats, created during each Bitcoin halving, are 100 times rarer than "rare sats."

Bitcoin Price Stability

Despite the halving event, Bitcoin has maintained relative stability. It currently trades at $65,166, indicating a 1.61% gain. Over the past week, the cryptocurrency has experienced a modest 0.70% increase, despite a 2.73% decline in the past month.

This report adds to the growing body of knowledge surrounding Bitcoin's halving events and their impact on the cryptocurrency market. As the halving cycle continues, it will be interesting to observe how it shapes the future of Bitcoin and the wider crypto ecosystem.
