Bitcoin Mine: Noise Complaints And Community Impact
Sep 17, 2024 at 01:00 am
Residents had complained for years about the continuous noise the cooling systems of the Bitcoin mining operation. Mayor Kjell-Børge Freiberg said that the noise had bothered a lot of the roughly 8,260 residents of the town.
Bitcoin miners shutting down is having an interesting impact on local communities.
Hadsel, Norway, saw the closure of a Bitcoin mine in the area, and while some residents were happy due to the noise pollution decreasing, others were not so thrilled when they received their electricity bills.
The Bitcoin mine, operated by Kryptovault, consumed a large portion of the income generated by the local power distributor, Noranett. With the closure of the mine, the company was forced to raise electricity rates by 20% to compensate for the lost revenue.
According to Noranett network manager Robin Jakobsen, losing a customer of Kryptovault’s size had a significant impact on their revenue.
The closure of the Bitcoin mine also resulted in a substantial increase in electricity bills for local households. Each home experienced an average annual rise of $300.
The Bitcoin miner paid 20% of the area’s grid fees, subsidizing other consumers. Now that the miner is gone, people’s power bills are skyrocketing.

The closure of the Bitcoin mine also resulted in a substantial increase in electricity bills for local households. Each home experienced an average annual rise of $300.
The data center used approximately 80 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity per year, which is comparable to the annual consumption of about 3,200 homes. With the loss of this revenue, Noranett was left to drastically reduce the energy load, which led to the noticeable increase in household electricity bills.
While some residents were pleased with the reduction in noise, others were concerned about the financial implications. According to Daniel Batten, a venture financier in climate tech, this scenario demonstrates how Bitcoin mining can contribute to stabilizing consumer electricity prices.
Hadsel’s experience also highlights the challenges faced by municipalities in striking a balance between environmental concerns and economic realities.
The large energy consumption of Bitcoin mining operations has sparked discussions and debates on potential regulations to curb these activities in Norway.
One proposal being considered would introduce regulations for such facilities, requiring data centers to adhere to stricter energy consumption policies and carry out registration activities, potentially leading to a shift or adjustment in the operations of miners.

- y friend, "And you're all friends withoutput: title: I Am a Token Black Friend
- Sep 19, 2024 at 08:15 am
- The black one in the group of white people. This title is not at all a comment on the depth of my relationships; I certainly am blessed to have the friends that I do. But by all definitions of the term, I am in many ways its poster child. And given the many conversations occurring right now around systemic racism, it would feel wrong not to use my position as a respected friend within a multitude of different white communities to contribute to the current dialogue. I believe my story speaks directly to the covert nature of the new breed of racism — its structural side, along with implicit bias — and may prove helpful to many I know who seek a better understanding.
