Bitcoin Fees Plummet After Hitting Record Highs on Halving Day

Apr 22, 2024 at 09:04 am

Bitcoin transaction fees have plummeted since reaching a record average of $128 on April 20. As of April 21, average fees for medium-priority transactions have dropped to $8-10, following a spike that saw $78.3 million paid in total fees the previous day. The surge in fees was driven by demand for inscription space in the Bitcoin halving block, where over $2.4 million was paid to miner ViaBTC.

Bitcoin Fees Plummet Sharply Following Record Highs on Halving Day

April 22, 2023: Bitcoin transaction fees have witnessed a dramatic decline, plummeting to an average of $8-10 for medium-priority transactions, a stark contrast to the record-breaking $128 average recorded just a day prior on April 20, the day of the fourth Bitcoin halving.

This significant drop in fees comes after Bitcoin's total daily fee revenue soared to an unprecedented $78.3 million on April 20, surpassing Ethereum's daily fee income by a remarkable 24-fold margin.

The record-setting fee volume on the halving day was primarily driven by a massive 37.7 Bitcoin ($2.4 million) transaction to Bitcoin miner ViaBTC in the halving block at block height 840,000, solidifying it as the most sought-after block in the network's 15-year existence.

A significant portion of the heightened demand for block 840,000 was attributed to memecoin and nonfungible token (NFT) enthusiasts vying to inscribe rare satoshis via the Runes protocol, a novel token standard launched at the halving block. The block accommodated 3,050 transactions, resulting in an average fee of approximately $800 per user.

Although block fees remained elevated until around block 840,200, they have since cooled considerably, stabilizing at around 1-2 Bitcoin.
