Binance Founder Changpeng Zhao Released From U.S. Prison Two Days Early
Sep 28, 2024 at 10:12 pm
Zhao had been serving a four-month prison sentence because Binance, his company, didn't follow U.S. anti-money laundering (AML) regulations.

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, also known as “CZ,” was released from U.S. federal custody on Friday, September 27, two days earlier than expected.
Zhao had been serving a four-month prison sentence after Binance failed to follow U.S. anti-money laundering regulations. As per U.S. code, if a prisoner’s release falls on a weekend, it is to be preponed to the preceding weekday. Hence, despite being scheduled for release on September 29, CZ was released two days prior.
Before the announcement, Binance Coin (BNB) was priced at $595, but after news of his early release spread, BNB quickly rose to $610.
CZ's legal troubles began when U.S. authorities realized that Binance was not doing enough to stop illicit activities on its exchange. The company was accused of allowing customers from restricted countries, such as Iran, to use its services, which is prohibited in the U.S.
CZ pleaded guilty in November 2023, and Binance agreed to pay a fine of $4.3 billion. As part of the agreement, CZ also stepped down as CEO. However, his net worth, which is estimated to be around $60 billion, was largely unaffected by the case.
On April 30, 2024, Zhao started serving his sentence. He was initially housed in a low-security prison in California before being moved to a halfway house, which allowed him some limited freedoms, including supervised visits and outings.
Despite not being involved in the day-to-day operations of Binance, CZ remains the company's largest shareholder and owns a significant portion of the business. Binance is thriving with over 230 million users worldwide.
The company is now being closely monitored by U.S. regulators to ensure compliance, especially with anti-money laundering regulations. Richard Teng is currently serving as Binance's CEO.
Since his release, CZ has maintained a low public profile, leaving many wondering about his next move. Before his legal troubles, he expressed a keen interest in philanthropy, particularly in education.
A week into his sentence, Zhao stated that he planned to dedicate most of his time in prison to writing a book. He also launched a project called Giggle Academy, which aimed to provide free education to children around the world.
This might be an area that CZ chooses to focus on more than reasserting his presence in the crypto space. However, CZ has hinted at his intention to pursue new investments in fields like biotechnology, blockchain, and AI.
The developments in Zhao's legal case have been known to influence the value of Binance's native token, BNB. On September 6, BNB was trading at $487.20. However, in the days leading up to CZ's release, it surged past $600.
BNB/USD Chart: CoinMarketCapBNB price reached its all-time high of $720 during CZ's prison stint and is currently trading at a 16% discount from that peak. At press time, BNB price shows a 2.45% increment over the past 24 hours, trading at $610. According to some analysts, this might just be the beginning, with potential for further price appreciation in the near future.
