Bhutan Revealed as a Major Bitcoin Holder

Sep 22, 2024 at 09:30 am

Crypto intelligence firm Arkham highlighted the Kingdom of Bhutan's bitcoin holdings on social media platform X this week.

Bhutan Revealed as a Major Bitcoin Holder

The government of Bhutan is currently holding over $828 million in bitcoin, making it one of the top bitcoin-holding governments in the world, according to onchain data by Arkham Intelligence.

However, unlike most governments, whose bitcoin holdings typically come from law enforcement asset seizures, Bhutan’s bitcoin holdings are the result of large-scale mining operations, which have ramped up dramatically since early 2023.

Bhutan’s government is actively involved in bitcoin mining through its investment arm, Druk Holdings. The country has reportedly constructed bitcoin mining facilities in multiple locations, with the largest being on the site of the now-defunct Education City project.

Satellite imagery and onchain data both indicate that the government began setting up bitcoin mining operations at the site in early 2023.

According to Arkham, the government’s bitcoin holdings are evident in the large and frequent bitcoin inflows to the government treasury, which are then periodically transferred to external custodians.

The government’s bitcoin mining activity is also confirmed by the regular maintenance of high hashrate levels, which are necessary for successful bitcoin mining.

Bhutan’s bitcoin mining operations and government bitcoin holdings have attracted attention within the crypto community, with some speculating on the potential impact of a government-owned bitcoin mining operation on the broader crypto industry and speculating whether other governments may follow suit.

Others have highlighted the economic benefits of bitcoin mining for Bhutan, which include job creation, increased foreign direct investment, and the generation of revenue for the government.
