Venture capital firm a16z Crypto has acquired an additional $55 million worth of LayerZero’s native token, ZRO, the firm announced via X post.
The newly purchased tokens will be subject to a three-year lockup period, showcasing the firm’s long-term faith in the project.
The move continues a16z’s support for LayerZero, having previously led both the Series A+ and Series B funding rounds.
“[We are] excited to announce that we’ve invested an additional $55M in @LayerZero_Core tokens (ZRO), with a 3-year lockup. Our global financial system is evolving, and it’s great to see the protocol enabling many new businesses and complex workflows to move onchain,” General Partner Ali Yahya wrote.
LayerZero (ZRO) is critical infrastructure for a new onchain financial system. It enables new business models and complex workflows to operate across blockchain networks.
Announcing an additional investment of $55 million in LayerZero (ZRO), with a 3-year lockup. Our global financial system is evolving, and it’s great to see the protocol enabling many new businesses and complex workflows to move onchain.
The post adds that LayerZero is positioning itself as a foundational layer for interoperability, likening its role to that of TCP/IP for the internet. It allows developers to build applications that function seamlessly across multiple chains.
The protocol currently supports over 125 blockchains, facilitates 70% of stablecoin interoperability, and has processed more than 140 million messages and $75 billion in volume.
The announcement highlights the increasing investor interest in infrastructure projects that enable seamless cross-chain functionality. As blockchain adoption continues to rise, LayerZero aims to become the default messaging protocol for connecting the fragmented ecosystems within the crypto domain.
In response to the news, ZRO surged over 10%, according to CoinMarketCap data.

- Apr 19, 2025 at 03:10 pm
- The legal climate surrounding Coinbase and Ripple has been fraught with tension. The SEC had originally filed charges against Coinbase in June 2023, accusing the exchange of operating as an unregistered securities exchange, broker, and clearing house, particularly related to its staking-as-a-service offering.
