The Atlantic Salmon 50p was released as part of the national celebrations for King Charles III's Coronation year
A new 50p coin has been unveiled as the ‘rarer’ coin in active circulation, surpassing even the Kew Gardens coin.
TikTok user @CoinCollectingWizard, who boasts 205,000 followers on the platform, recently shared his insights on the scarcest 50p coin currently in circulation. The coin in question is the Atlantic Salmon 50p, which was released as part of the national celebrations for King Charles III's Coronation year.
“With only 200,000 of these, this is an exciting day for coin collecting. It takes the crown from the all-mighty Kew Gardens 50p coin which held the title for the past 15 years.”
The Kew Gardens 50p coin, which was released in 2009, had previously held the title of being the rarest 50p coin in circulation, with a mintage of 210,000 when it was first released. However, the Atlantic Salmon 50p coin now surpasses the Kew Gardens coin in terms of rarity.
The TikTok user also highlighted the high demand for the Atlantic Salmon 50p coin, which is evident from its increasing value.
“The coin has already started to gain attraction on eBay and other coin groups. And the price is skyrocketing, so keep an eye out for the new rarest 50p you can find in your change.”
If you happen to come across the Atlantic Salmon 50p coin in your change, it is advisable to consult an expert for appraisal. According to eBay listings, this rare coin could fetch upwards of £50.
