Arbitrum's Token Unlock Looms, Posing Price Decline Risk

Apr 16, 2024 at 10:00 pm

Arbitrum (ARB) faces a potential price drop due to an impending token unlock scheduled for April 16. Data indicates that 92.65 million tokens (3.49% of circulating supply) will be released, with a significant portion allocated to team members, advisors, and investors. Historically, token unlocks have triggered sell-offs that have negatively impacted prices, and Arbitrum's price may follow suit, despite the lower magnitude of this unlock compared to a previous event that caused a significant decline.

Arbitrum's Impending Token Unlock Poses Price Decline Threat

Amidst heightened market volatility, Arbitrum's (ARB) upcoming token unlock on April 16 has cast a shadow over its price trajectory. Historical evidence suggests that such events trigger significant market movements, often leading to substantial sell-offs and price declines.

Upcoming Unlock Details

According to data from TokenUnlock, a staggering 92.65 million Arbitrum tokens, representing 3.49% of the circulating supply, are poised to be unlocked on the fateful day. Of these unlocked tokens, 56.13 million ($65.10 million) will be distributed to the team, future team members, and advisors, while the remaining 36.52 million ($42.36 million) will find their way to investors.

Sell-Off Concerns

Token unlocks have historically been met with a wave of massive sell-offs by beneficiaries, exerting downward pressure on the token's price. Experts anticipate a similar scenario unfolding for Arbitrum, especially given the precedent set by its last token unlock on March 16.

March Token Unlock Impact

During its previous token unlock on March 16, Arbitrum witnessed a notable price decline. CoinMarketCap data reveals that Arbitrum's price, which had closed the preceding day at over $2, plummeted to $1.8 on the day of the unlock.

Magnitude Difference

While the impending token unlock is cause for concern, it is important to note that its magnitude is significantly smaller compared to the previous one. In March, a whopping 1.11 billion Arbitrum tokens (41.89% of the circulating supply) were unlocked, dwarfing the 92.65 million tokens scheduled for release in April.

Potential Impact

Consequently, the impact of any potential sell-off this time around may not be as severe as the previous episode. Nonetheless, Arbitrum remains at risk of falling below the crucial $1 support level for the first time in a substantial period, given its current proximity to that price range.

Other Notable Token Unlocks

Axie Infinity (AXS) will also experience a substantial token unlock on April 17, with $76.96 million worth of tokens (7.6% of circulating supply) entering the market. Apecoin (APE) is another cryptocurrency facing a potential price correction due to its upcoming token unlock on the same day. Approximately $18.57 million worth of Apecoin tokens (2.48% of circulating supply) will be unlocked, with a significant portion going to Yuga Labs founders.

Bearish Implications for Yuga Labs

A significant drop in Apecoin's price could further exacerbate the bearish outlook for the broader Yuga Labs ecosystem, as the Bored Ape NFT has already experienced a precipitous 90% decline from its peak value.
