Apr 02, 2024 at 07:47 am
Venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has announced a $30 million investment in technology-centric gaming startups through its early-phase accelerator program "SPEEDRUN." The fund will focus on areas such as AI, VR/AR, and Web3 gaming, with each selected startup receiving $750,000 in funding and mentorship. a16z's SPEEDRUN program is highly competitive, with only 1% of applicants accepted, but has a strong track record with 80% of its first cohort securing funding after Demo Day.
Venture Capital Giant Andreessen Horowitz Invests $30 Million in Gaming Innovation Startups
Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), a prominent venture capital firm, has unveiled plans to invest $30 million in groundbreaking gaming startups focused on cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR), and Web3 blockchain-based games.
"Our focus is on investing at the confluence of technology and gaming, encompassing AI infrastructure, 3D assets, VR/AR, Web3 online games, gamified consumer applications, and various other emerging areas," remarked Andrew Chen, a general partner at a16z and the overseer of its Games Fund One.
The $30 million investment will be disbursed over a period of 45 events through the firm's early-stage accelerator program, SPEEDRUN, according to Chen's April 1 blog post. Each startup participating in the program will receive $750,000 in funding.
SPEEDRUN provides a comprehensive 12-week program, where participants receive not only financial support but also guidance from experienced industry veterans, mentors, and a "community of audacious founders," as explained by Chen.
a16z is receptive to a wide range of startups, from those in the conceptual stage to those with established products and significant revenue streams, Chen stated.
However, competition for entry into a16z's SPEEDRUN program is highly selective, with only 1% of applicants being admitted into each cohort. Despite this exclusivity, Chen noted that 80% of companies from SPEEDRUN's inaugural cohort secured follow-on funding from investors after their Demo Day.

Applications for the program are due by May 19, with the 12-week program scheduled to run from July 29 to Oct. 20, 2024, in Los Angeles, California.
Notable graduates of a16z's SPEEDRUN program in the Web3 gaming sector include Matchday, a soccer-themed game, and Promodium, a non-fungible token (NFT)-based game.
"Tens of millions" of individuals are expected to enter the Web3 space through gaming in 2024, according to industry executives.
Chen also oversees the firm's $600 million Games Fund One, launched in 2022, which has made investments in Roblox, Sandbox, and Sky Marvis, the creators of the popular blockchain game Axie Infinity.
Beyond its Games Fund One, a16z has also invested in blockchain-based gaming startups through its cryptocurrency division, including Legendary Games, Yield Guild Games, Azra Games, CCP Games, NOD Games, and Voldex.
The Web3 gaming industry is projected to experience significant growth, expanding from an estimated value of $154 billion in 2023 to a projected $614 billion by 2030, representing a compound annual growth rate of 21.8%, according to a report published in January by Fortune Business Insights.
