Sometimes gold coins are not the ones that reach the highest prices at auctions. However, any gold dollar, regardless of the face or market value is suitable for any numismatics lover.
The 2006 $50 American Buffalo 99.99% Fine Gold coin was sold for $2,990 at auction. Heritage Auctions handled the sale, not eBay. The coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint and is part of the American Buffalo bullion coin program. It is the first time that the U.S. Mint struck 24-karat pure gold coins. The coin features an Indian chief design on the obverse and a buffalo design on the reverse. It is also the first time that these coins did not depict an eagle on the design of billions for the first time.
