I want to walk you through how I called this one perfectly. Check out the two images attached! Let's break down what happened.
The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell last week, while those continuing to receive aid dropped to the lowest level since March 2020.
Continuing claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 143,433 to 1.34 million in the week ended March 26, the lowest since the week of March 14, 2020, according to Labor Department data released Thursday. Economists polled by Dow Jones had expected 1.4 million continuing claims.
Initial claims for state unemployment benefits fell 4,000 to a seasonally adjusted 184,000 in the March 26 week, the Labor Department said Thursday. Economists had expected 200,000 new claims.
The four-week moving average of new claims, considered a better measure of underlying trends, fell 11,000 to 203,500. Continuing claims also fell by a four-week moving average of 103,250 to 1.4 million.
Together, the data suggests that the labor market continues to improve, but that gains are slowing. The Federal Reserve has been watching the labor market closely as it decides when to begin raising interest rates to cool inflation.
The four-week moving average of continuing claims has now fallen below the pre-pandemic level of 1.42 million for the first time since the week of March 14, 2020. However, the four-week moving average of new claims is still above the pre-pandemic level of 172,500.
The number of people receiving unemployment benefits under the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program, which covers workers who are not typically eligible for state unemployment benefits, fell 103,370 to 583,434 in the March 26 week.
The total number of people receiving unemployment benefits fell 246,803 to 2.04 million in the March 26 week. This is the lowest level since the week of March 14, 2020.
