Backup virtual currency wallet

Mnemonic word backup

  • The mnemonic word consists of 12 to 24 words, which is the core of restoring the wallet. After creating a wallet, a mnemonic word is generated. For example, when creating a MetaMask wallet, the page will display mnemonic words.

  • Write the mnemonic words on paper immediately, do not take photos or record them with electronic devices. Choose good quality paper and put it in safes such as safes to prevent damage, loss and acquisition by others.

Private key backup

  • A private key is a key long string that accesses and controls wallet assets. Most wallets support exporting private keys, such as Bitcoin’s Electrum wallet, and the export option can be found in the settings.

  • After exporting the private key, copy it to a secure USB drive or write it on paper to put it in a safe. Make sure backups are not accessed unauthorized and avoid storage on connected devices.

Hardware wallet backup

  • Hardware wallets like Ledger, Trezor, etc. are physical devices that store private keys and are highly secure. When purchasing a hardware wallet, set it according to the instructions, if you connect to a computer, use the official software to configure it.

  • Import the private key into the hardware wallet, remembering the recovery phrase during the process. Keep your hardware wallet properly to prevent loss, theft and physical damage.

Multi-signature wallet backup

  • Multi-signature wallets require multiple signatures to be traded, which increases security. When backing up, you must back up all private keys or mnemonics that participate in multi-signature.

  • Ensure that multiple signers have at least one trustworthy and prevent asset losses. Backups of different signers are stored separately and the backup integrity is checked regularly.

Cold storage backup

  • Cold storage is to save the wallet offline and prevent hacking. Wallet information can be printed or recorded on unnetworked devices, such as paper notebooks, or using unnetworked hard disks.

  • Regularly check the integrity and safety of cold storage media to prevent damage and loss of media. Store in a safe place where it is dry, fire-proof and waterproof.

Cloud backup

  • Cloud backup is to store wallet information on a remote server. Choose reliable cloud service providers such as Dropbox and Google Drive, register an account and log in.

  • Follow the prompts for the wallet application to upload the wallet backup file to the cloud service. Enable two-step verification and set a strong password to protect the cloud account. Do not operate on public networks to prevent information leakage.

Restore virtual currency wallet

Determine the recovery method

  • Hot wallets, such as online wallets such as MetaMask and Coinbase, are usually restored with mnemonics or private keys. Mobile wallet recovery is similar to hot wallets, pay attention to system version compatibility.

  • Cold wallets, such as Ledger, Trezor, and other hardware wallets, require specific recovery tools or applications, and follow the official instructions. There are different methods for recovering wallets of different types. First determine the wallet type.

Find the backup media

  • If you are backing up mnemonic words, find the paper to write mnemonic words to ensure completeness and clarity. If the private key is backed up, take out the USB drive with the private key or find the paper where the private key is written.

  • Backup of hardware wallet and find the hardware wallet device. Multi-signature wallet, collect all private keys or mnemonic backups participating in the signature. Cloud backup logs into the cloud service account and downloads the backup file.

Verify backup

  • Verify backup integrity and availability before restoring. For mnemonic words, check whether the words are blurred or missing, you can try to write them dictatedly on paper to check. Private key, confirm that there is no smear or damage.

  • Hardware wallet, check whether the device can be turned on normally, connected to the computer, etc. Cloud backup, after downloading the backup file, check whether the file size and format are correct, and whether it can be opened normally.

Recover wallet

  • Download the same application as the original wallet to ensure the version is compatible. Open the Wallet app and find "Recover Wallet" or similar options, such as clicking "Import Wallet" in MetaMask.

  • Follow the prompts to enter the mnemonic or private key, pay attention to case sensitivity and check carefully. If you restore the hardware wallet, follow the official application guidelines, such as connecting the device and entering recovery phrases. Wait for wallet verification information, complete recovery, and check whether the assets are displayed correctly.

Notes on backup and recovery

Backup precautions

  • Don't rely on a single backup method, combine multiple methods, such as combining mnemonics, private keys and cloud backup. Update backups regularly, after each transaction or after a period of time.

  • The backup media is stored in a safe place to prevent fire, flood and other disasters, and can be stored in multiple places. Tell your family about the importance of backup and recovery methods to prevent accidents.

Recovery precautions

  • Carefully check the mnemonic words, private keys and other information to prevent input errors. If you encounter an error message, check input, wallet compatibility and network connection.

  • After recovery, check the account information and confirm that the assets are complete. Consider changing your password and enabling two-factor verification to improve security. Continue to backup regularly to ensure future data security.
