What is the issuance and circulation of STX coins?
The initial supply of 1,818,040,000 STX tokens was distributed between early investors, advisors, and the Stacks Foundation for development and ecosystem growth.

Issuance and Circulation of STX Coins
STX (Stacks) is a layer-1 blockchain designed to bring smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps) to Bitcoin. The STX token is the native cryptocurrency of the Stacks ecosystem and plays a crucial role in its operation and governance.
1. Initial Issuance:
The initial supply of STX tokens was 1,818,040,000 STX, which were created during the Stacks Genesis event in October 2020. Of this initial supply:
- 40% (727,216,000 STX) were distributed to early investors and advisors.
- 60% (1,090,824,000 STX) were allocated to the Stacks Foundation for development and ecosystem growth.
2. Block Rewards:
New STX tokens are continuously issued as block rewards to miners who secure the Stacks network. The initial block reward was set at 512 STX per block. This reward decreases over time according to a predefined schedule.
3. Mining Process:
Miners create new blocks on the Stacks chain by performing Proof-of-Work (PoW) calculations. These calculations require significant computational power, and successful miners are rewarded with STX tokens.
4. Circulation:
As of June 2023, the circulating supply of STX tokens is approximately 1,235,739,206 STX. This value represents the total number of STX tokens that are actively traded in the market.
5. Market Value:
The market value of the STX token is determined by supply and demand in the cryptocurrency markets. The price of STX has fluctuated significantly since its launch, but it generally follows market trends and the overall performance of the cryptocurrency industry.
6. Use Cases:
STX tokens are primarily used for:
- Transaction Fees: Users pay STX tokens to conduct transactions on the Stacks blockchain.
- Staking: STX holders can stake their tokens to earn a portion of the block rewards.
- Governance: STX token holders can participate in the governance of the Stacks ecosystem by submitting and voting on proposals.
- Utility: STX tokens can be used to purchase products and services within the Stacks ecosystem.
