RATHDRUM — Students in the North Idaho STEM Charter Academy National Honor Society broke their own record with this year’s coin drive, raising $6,830.78 in one week for the nonprofit Safe Passage.

“This all goes to people who need extra support from our organization,” Amanda Krier, Safe Passage executive director, said. “It means a lot to be able to help the community, especially the most vulnerable members of our community.”

Each year, NHS students research and select an organization that they want to support through the coin drive. Students bring in pocket change and cash — whatever they can contribute.

Safe Passage serves survivors of domestic violence and other forms of abuse. It is gearing up for its end of the year campaign to ‘adopt a family’ for the holidays.

“It’s good to learn to help your community,” NHS junior Braddock Nelson said. “Even if you don’t know them personally, it’s great to help when you can.”

One family changed the game by making a $5,000 donation, making this year the biggest coin drive so far.

“I like helping with the coin drive each year because it’s so interesting to see how much we can raise, especially for a cause like Safe Passage,” NHS junior Tess Fallquist said.

NHS adviser Stephanie Childress was impressed by the effort NHS students put into the coin drive.
