A rare Continental Dollar coin, designed by Benjamin Franklin and minted in 1776, has been found in a toffee tin and sold for £25,000 at auction.

The pewter coin, measuring 38mm across, was discovered by auctioneers Joseph Trinder at Wotton Auction Rooms in Wotton-under-Edge.

직경 38mm의 백랍 동전은 Wotton-under-Edge의 Wotton Auction Rooms에서 경매인 Joseph Trinder에 의해 발견되었습니다.

Only around 6,000 of the coins are believed to have been made, and as few as 100 are thought to remain.

The coin had to be sent to the United States to be verified due to its rarity and the number of fakes in existence.

It was eventually graded Very Fine Details by coin grading experts the Numismatic Guaranty Company.

The coin was sold on Thursday, December 15 at Wotton Auction Rooms for a total of £25,000.

Auctioneer Mr Trinder said: “This coin represents a discovery that is in the top five of my career to date, and the sort of thing every auctioneer up and down the country hopes they’ll find.

“We discovered it in a large toffee tin a private vendor brought to us, full of all manner of interesting sorts of knick-knacks - other coins, little bits of jewellery, carved stone and fossils.
