Solana vs Ethereum: a race for developers

Solana vs Ethereum: a race for developers

The rivalry between Solana and Ethereum continues to heat up, with both showing no signs of backing down. Solana is making aggressive moves to show it can be a serious competitor, while Ethereum remains the undisputed leader in the crypto sector.

However, there was a surprising trend in 2024 — Solana attracted more new crypto developers than Ethereum, marking a historic shift in the blockchain landscape.

Solana vs Ethereum: Battle for developers

In 2024, the Solana blockchain attracted a whopping 7,625 new developers, surpassing Ethereum for the first time since 2016. Solana capitalized on its strengths — low fees and unmatched transaction speed — to achieve this feat, with a massive 83% increase in new recruits.

Meanwhile, Ethereum saw a 17% decline in its monthly active developers, which settled at 6,244.

Despite the drop, Ethereum still has the highest number of blockchain developers globally. A significant portion of this activity is driven by layer 2 solutions, like Optimism and Arbitrum, which together accounted for 56% of Ethereum developers.

Highlighting this aspect, Maria Shen, partner at Electric Capital, noted:

"Ethereum thrives because of its deep network effects, and the data confirms it."

Some key figures from 2024:

While Solana is making huge strides, Ethereum remains a giant that even the most ambitious competitors find hard to dislodge.

Crypto and blockchain: A landscape that's increasingly global

Beyond this rivalry, the Electric Capital report also showcases a broader transformation in the crypto developer landscape on a global scale.

Asia overtook North America in 2024, emerging as the primary hub for blockchain talent. With India alone contributing 17% of new developers, the continent exemplified this reshuffling.

In the United States, however, not all is lost, as the country still retains 19% of the total active crypto developers. Despite this, Shen emphasized the need for greater global diversity, stating that "crypto is designed to be borderless."

The rise of developers in Asia can be partly attributed to local initiatives, such as hackathons, technical training, and community support. This global expansion is set to make the blockchain ecosystem even more robust, while simultaneously heightening the competition to attract the best talent.

In a record-breaking year for Solana, 2024 will be etched in investors' minds as a pivotal year. But as December draws to a close, they eagerly anticipate further developments from their favorite blockchain, preparing to predict the next trends that will shape the crypto landscape.
