The 1952 Sixpence Coin: A "Holy Grail" for Collectors

A rare sixpence coin from 1952 has got collectors and social media users excited.

TikTok user @CoinCollectingWizard, who boasts a following of 211,000, hailed the coin as the "holy grail" of sixpence coins.

"Who remembers putting a six pence in your Christmas pudding?" he asked his followers.

The TikTok aficionado explained that the coin is particularly sought-after by collectors due to its scarcity, with only around one million minted.

The pre-decimal sixpence, which was worth one-fortieth of a pound or six old pence, continued to be legal tender for a period following decimalisation in 1971 but has since disappeared from UK circulation.

However, it remains a popular item for collectors.

"It's the holy grail of sixpence coin collecting, these continued to be legal tender for a while after the currency became decimal in 1971," he said.

The value of such a coin can vary greatly depending on its condition, with even a lower-grade coin fetching up to £30, while pristine examples can go for significantly more, reports the Express.

The 1952 sixpence features the image of King George VI and is made from cupro-nickel.

It features an uncrowned Royal portrait on the obverse and a Royal cipher on the reverse, flanked by the year and surmounted by a crown.

The top edge of the coin features the famous "FID DEF" motto, while the bottom proudly displays "SIXPENCE".

The sixpence coin, which was worth six pre-decimal pennies, was first minted in silver during Edward VI's reign in 1551, transitioning to cupro-nickel post-1947.

The sixpence, also known as a tanner or half-shilling, was last minted for circulation in 1967.

Collectors are now heading to eBay in search of the coveted 1952 sixpence.

Before searching for that rare coin, it's best to do your research, as factors like mintage numbers and condition can significantly impact a coin's worth.

One TikTok user commented on the video about the coin, saying: "I have four in my collection."
