The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has issued a commemorative coin to mark the 555th Jayanti (birth anniversary) of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of the Sikh faith.
Nanak’s birth anniversary was celebrated last week at Gurdwara Janamashtham Nankana Sahib, where Sikh yatrees (pilgrims) from all over the globe, including India, performed religious ceremonies.
The coin is circular, machined, and measures 30 mm in diameter and weighs 13.5 grams. It is comprised of a nickel brass alloy with 79% copper, 20% zinc, and 1% nickel.
The reverse side of the coin depicts a waxing crescent and a five-pointed star rising to the north-west. Along the perimeter, the top of the crescent star is inscribed in Urdu calligraphy with the words “Islami Jamhuria Pakistan”.
The year of issuance 2024 is shown underneath the crescent and on top of two wheat springs with curled upward arms. The face value of the coin, “55” in strong letters, and RUPIA in Urdu script, are inscribed on the right and left sides of the crescent star, respectively.
The obverse side of the coin depicts the monument of “Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji”. The inscription “555th Birthday Celebrations” is inscribed on the top of the monument, “Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji” is inscribed at the bottom of the monument, and “1469-2024” is inscribed around the peripheral at the bottom of the coin, representing the span of birthday festivities.
It is important to note that Sikhi is a global religion with millions of members, and the holiest sites of the faith are located in Pakistan.
The coin will be released via the exchange counters at all SBP Banking Services Corporation field offices beginning November 22, 2024, the announcement said.
