Monty Don shares key gardening tip to make sure your plants survive the winter

The 69-year-old BBC Gardener's World star said that there are some important jobs gardeners can be getting on with in the days and weeks ahead
TV gardening guru Monty Don has shared a key tip to ensure your plants survive the winter and come back stronger than ever next spring.
The 69-year-old BBC Gardener's World star said there are some important jobs gardeners can be getting on with in the days and weeks ahead.
With the warm soil and mild conditions presenting a perfect opportunity to get your plants ready for the coming season, Monty explained this is a particularly vital time of year for one type of flower in particular.
Herbaceous perennials, which die down to the ground each year, but whose roots remain alive ready for new growth in spring, can be moved to a new position now.
Putting them in place in the early autumn gives them time for their roots to become established before winter.
Monty said: "September is a good month for moving herbaceous perennials.
"By doing this when they are in full flower, you can clearly see how they will look in their new position and how they relate to the other planting around them."
It's also a crucial time for camellias, azaleas and rhododendrons, which are in the forming process at this time of year.
Camellias, Azaleas and rhododendrons form their flower buds in late summer and autumn, he explained in a recent blog, and he stressed the importance of watering enough or else their buds will not develop properly.
Monty wrote: "In other words the display that they give you next spring is largely determined over the coming weeks.
"If they are too dry the buds will not form properly and those that are made quite often subsequently drop off in the spring before flowering as a result of dehydration the previous autumn.
"So give them a good soak - with rainwater if at all possible - especially if they are growing in a container, and do so each week for the next couple of months."
You should try to use rainwater if possible, he added, especially for potted plants.
Monty also said that this is a good time to put down new grass and repair some patches that might be a bit worse for wear.
He described September sun as the "most benign of the year" for replacing and looking after turf, and shared a few things you can do now to ensure a vibrant comeback next Spring.
