The 1876-CC 20 Cent: A Numismatic Prize of the First Order
Nov 23, 2024 at 07:01 am
According to Heritage Auctions, the 1876-CC 20 Cent has been regarded as “a numismatic prize of the first order“.
The 20-cent coin was authorized on March 3, 1875, by an Act of Congress. It was struck in response to a shortage of five-cent pieces, which was causing merchants to overcharge customers. The 20-cent coin was intended to solve this problem, but its unpopular denomination doomed it from the start. Had the Mint discontinued the quarter when this specimen was released, it may have been a different story.
