UA Saverdun Advances with Dramatic Victory Over Avenir Aturin
May 06, 2024 at 03:47 am
In a closely fought match, Saverdun emerged victorious, securing their place in the round of 16. Despite facing a significant handicap, the visitors began the game with unwavering determination, quickly scoring a try. Saverdun responded with equal strength, and the score remained close at halftime. The second half saw a flurry of activity, with both teams trading blows. Ultimately, it was Saverdun's relentless defense and timely tries that sealed their victory.
In a fiercely contested match, UA Saverdun emerged victorious, securing their place in the Round of 16. Despite starting with a 23-point handicap, the visitors from Avenir Aturin initiated the encounter with audacity. A deft kick into the corner set up Barrouillet's surge, culminating in a try that gave Aturin an early 5-0 lead in the 16th minute.
UA Saverdun's response was emphatic. Capitalizing on a maul, the Ariège-based side's powerful third-line spearhead, Lledos, charged through the Landes defense and flattened the try line. Charrié's conversion brought the score to 7-5 in the 23rd minute. The remainder of the first half played out with no further scoring, leaving the match evenly poised.
The second period commenced with a surge in rhythm and intensity. Avenir Aturin's trio of three-quarters combined seamlessly, leading to a try by captain Cauzette, which put Aturin back in the lead at 10-7 in the 41st minute.
Unfazed, Saverdun regrouped and gradually gained the upper hand, meticulously constructing their path to victory. The Rouge et Noir relentlessly attacked Aturin's line, edging closer to a breakthrough with each attempt.
An opportunity arose from a Landes restart, as Carvalho deftly retrieved the ball, zigzagged through the opposing defense, and sprinted 50 meters before offloading to Beneyton. Beneyton, in turn, passed to the surging Armengaud, who completed the sequence by crossing the goal line. Charrié added the conversion, granting Saverdun a 14-10 advantage in the 53rd minute.
Saverdun's momentum continued to build as Da Costa, emerging from a maul, powered his way over the line, extending their lead to 19-10 in the 59th minute. The hosts had effectively sealed the aggregate victory.
Avenir Aturin, however, refused to capitulate, mounting a spirited challenge. Their unrelenting pressure paid off as Lavedan darted through to score a try, reducing the deficit to 19-15 in the 63rd minute. Aturin's resurgence culminated in a further try, this time from Manciet, after a powerful maul drove them towards the posts. Dupouy's conversion brought the score to 19-22, leaving UA Saverdun facing the prospect of losing their first match at Paul-Fines.
As the clock ticked down, the minutes seemed to stretch endlessly. In a moment of brilliance, Bézard twice challenged the Aturin defense. While his first attempt proved unsuccessful, his second surge proved decisive, earning Saverdun a vital try. Charrié's conversion sealed the victory at 26-22 in the 76th minute.
Despite the grueling 80-minute physical battle, Saverdun's staunch defense held firm, refusing to yield ground under the pressure of Aturin's relentless attacks. The victory propelled UA Saverdun into the Round of 16, scheduled for two weeks hence.
Benoît Tessarotto, co-coach of UA Saverdun, acknowledged the challenges faced during the match, contrasting it to their comfortable victory in the first leg. He expressed satisfaction with the final result, emphasizing the significance of overcoming the hurdle of the playoffs, which had previously been a source of concern for the club. He also expressed hope that the players would find mental respite and focus their efforts on securing promotion to Fédérale 2.3.
Jean-Paul Trille, coach of Avenir Aturin, praised his players for their unwavering effort and determination, asserting that they had nothing to be ashamed of. He acknowledged their defeat but wished the Saverdun players well in their future endeavors.
